We met Stephen Marshall in the winter of 2011 in Petaluma, California, where he builds little rooms and houses on wheels. We liked his ideas: why build expensive, permanent housing space to take care of shorter term needs which may change anyway? His company is http://littlehouseonthetrailer.com and he builds everything from a tiny, simple one room studio space to a complete livable home. But as we are discovering everywhere in the tiny house movement, zoning for permanently occupied dwellings under 500 square feet or so is the bugbear. In this interview Stephen talks about zoning, about how the way we live is changing what we need to live in, and about the design of small spaces.
