Steve Whitman is turning his suburban lot in Plymouth, NH into a mini-farm, but that doesn't mean he's plowing up his lawn and planting corn for ethanol. He teaches permaculture at Plymouth State University and Colby-Sawyer College and holds down a day job as a planning consultant. So it's no surprise that he's putting concept into action at home, gradually transforming the small piece of land where he and his wife live with their two children into a place where he can grow a lot of food. Permaculture design is site specific and system-driven; there's no formula, and, in general, the idea is to tweak your local ecology to make the best use of what you've got. For a permaculture enthusiast, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Steve has covered his front lawn with rough, ragged beds of sticks, leaves and manure over sheets of cardboard.
