I had the opportunity to build a new garden in my father-in-law's front yard in West Lafayette Indiana, and decided to follow, as closely as possible, the biointensive methods developed by John Jeavons. That meant "double-digging" the beds, a fairly labor intensive task, as the 60-year-old sod lay over hard-pan clay.
