Many of us stay silent out of embarrassment or shame.Victim-blaming is common when we open our mouths to tell our stories.
People might try to minimize our pain by saying that others have it worse than us or that we weren't physically abused and therefore shouldn't "complain". Victims of abuse stay silent to avoid negative reactions from friends and family that reinforce feelings of self-blame. Being silenced reinforces uncertainty about whether our experiences qualified as abuse.
We need people to listen. We need people who will validate us and our experience.
